You may have noticed not too long ago that a banner popped up on Netflix’s Sense8 stating, “NEW EPISODES.” Well, don’t get used to that banner being adorned onto the Sense8 thumbnail, because there will be no season 3.
The sci-fi drama joins a very small list of Netflix shows that have not been renewed, as it joins the likes of Hemlock Grove, Marco Polo, Bloodline, and the recently canceled The Get Down. Speculation continues to swarm around the reason for the show’s cancellation, but most signs point to money. Each episode of Sense8 reportedly takes $9 million to produce!
The only explanation given was by the VP of Netflix Original Content, Cindy Holland on the streaming site’s official press site. She stated,
Statement from Cindy Holland, VP Netflix original content:
“After 23 episodes, 16 cities and 13 countries, the story of the Sense8 cluster is coming to an end. It is everything we and the fans dreamed it would be: bold, emotional, stunning, kick ass, and outright unforgettable. Never has there been a more truly global show with an equally diverse and international cast and crew, which is only mirrored by the connected community of deeply passionate fans all around the world. We thank Lana, Lilly, Joe and Grant for their vision, and the entire cast and crew for their craftsmanship and commitment.”
Fans of Sense8 alike are devastated by the news, even going as far to as to start a petition on Change.org to convince Hulu to pick up the show. With Arrested Development continuing its run FOX to Netflix, and Community turning to Hulu after getting the ax from NBC, anything is possible.
