Major League Soccer (MLS) is looking to spread their popularity across America. To make their content readily available in the hands of potential viewers on something as large as Twitter’s database is a huge step in that direction. That is why MLS just signed a three-year with Twitter to broadcast their content. Speaking on this historic moment for MLS, Senior Vice President of Media, Chris Schlosser stated,
“MLS constantly strives to connect with fans in new and innovative ways. Our fans are the youngest and most socially engaged in pro sports, which is why we are excited to partner with Twitter to feature live matches on their platform.”
During the season, the social media giant will stream 24 live events absolutely free. On top of that, Twitter will also promote and play on-demand content each week. To get in on all the action, check out @UnivisionSports.Twitter has a long past with live streaming sports. The social media platform also recently agreed to stream original content for NASCAR. However their biggest claim to live streaming game was Twitter was the first to stream NFL’s Thursday Night Football. This lead to Prime Video trying the deal out this past year. That success has culminated in a bidding war over next year’s Thursday Night Football contract that Twitter is hoping to win.
As far as soccer agreements go, Twitter gets set to live stream the FIFA World Cup in July. The world thought that was going to be Twitter’s introduction to soccer, but that will no longer be the case as the first MLS match will be streamed today at 3:30 PM ET.
The Vice President and Global Head of Content Partnerships for Twitter, Kay Madati, stated,
“We are excited to collaborate with Major League Soccer to bring live soccer matches and video highlights to Twitter. Passionate MLS fans will now have live match day action alongside real-time commentary from experts and fellow fans all in one place on Twitter.”
