fuboTV Adds Discovery, Diversifies Catalog

fuboTV has been long-heralded as a streaming service designed for sports havens. Heck, they even have a Cycling channel as an add-on. However, you must really love the sport to want to add on to the already pricey $54.99 subscription. Now to make that high price point more appealing, the sports-heavy streaming service is looking to get other members of the family hooked. That’s why they’ve added 13 channels to their lineup, including Discovery Communications content.

Discovery on fuboTV

Discovery Communications has been making major moves after openly expressing their disgust for the cable television landscape last year. They blamed ESPN and sports content for driving away their demographics who don’t want to pay high cable subscriptions for shows on channels like OWN and HGTV.

Funny enough, Discovery is now entering a deal with the most sports-centered streaming service in the over-the-top (OTT) live television wars.

The media giant just signed on to allow fuboTV the rights to live stream the following network subsidiaries under the Discovery Communications umbrella:

  • Discovery Channel
  • TLC
  • Investigation Discovery
  • Animal Planet
  • OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network
  • MotorTrend

These channels will be included in the base model for fuboTV. fuboTV already had access to some Discovery Communications content due to an agreement with Scripps Networks earlier in the year.

So, these newly acquired Discovery Communications shows will sit alongside their sister networks, including:

  • HGTV
  • Food Network
  • Travel Channel

fuboTV confirmed they also renewed their agreements with Discovery and Scripps to maintain rights to these networks as well.

Discovery Add-Ons Coming to fuboTV

Another part of this deal sees additional Discovery entertainment being offered on the monthly add-on subscription called fubo Extra. For $5.99 added to the $54.99, you will get at least 30 more channels.

Thanks to this new deal with Discovery, some of that content will include these Discovery entities:

  • Science Channel
  • Destination America
  • Discovery Family
  • American Heroes Channel
  • Discovery Life

Discovery will also be involved in the growing Español market.

Discovery en Español and More Coming to fubo Latino

Currently, fuboTV doesn’t have an extensive catalog of Latino content. Therefore, they have their own base package that is strictly for Español viewers. This service is called fubo Latino and is $24.99. Now, fubo Latino subscribers will get access to Discovery en Español and Discovery Familia.

With fubo TV, Spanish speakers get 20 channels. However, they can upgrade to Latino Plus for $7.99 extra per month. With Latino Plus, you will get 15 more channels with Spanish-speaking content.

The Future for Discovery and fubo TV

Discovery seems to be a key part of fuboTV’s long-term strategy. fuboTV CFO, Joel Armijo, released a statement on their commitment to Discovery Communications.

The official press release stated,

“Today’s content agreement broadens the strategic relationship between Discovery and fuboTV that began almost two years ago with the former Scripps Networks. We are excited to be adding more Discovery brands alongside their lifestyle networks, which we already carry. These brands, including HGTV and Food Network, are among our top performing entertainment networks, and this agreement allows us to extend our partnership for years to come. We expect to be similarly successful with our new Discovery networks.”

As part of this agreement, fuboTV will get a backlog of content for their on-demand library that includes 60,000 hours worth of movies and television.

fuboTV also entered agreements with the following networks:

It’s clear to see fuboTV is looking to pull in sports lovers and get the rest of the family on board. Are you a fan of fuboTV? Share in the comments!
