As we have been following, Discovery is looking to curb their losses. The multimedia communications company has seen a drop in profit due to people ditching cable. Pointing their fingers at expensive cable packages that are the result of expensive sports channels, Discovery is hoping to take their brand over-the-top to reach the cord-cutting community.
Their first step into these waters starts in Germany. Teaming with ProSiebenSat.1, Discovery will be launching an ad-supported video streaming service. This service will see original and premium content from television channels in Germany, paired up with Discovery Communications content.
Content will include:
- kabel eins
- ProSieben MAXX
- SAT.1 Gold
More content will be added as the service continues to roll out. Discovery Communications is also open to allowing more companies into the partnership.
Michael Lang, President of International Development & Digital for Discovery, spoke on this new partnership,
“This is an exciting new way for millions of German TV fans to watch their favourite Discovery shows and is just the beginning of a dynamic new partnership. This announcement is just the start as we work to add more channels and content partners, greater functionality, and enhanced technological capabilities and commercial opportunities in the months ahead.”
Details are still being hammered, but the service is expected to see the light of day sometime in 2018.
