Amazon is attempting to take over the world. They’re achieving this by branching out far and wide to different arenas they were never in before. Now, they have a pantry service, brick-and-mortar pick-up areas, and streaming services. Next up? The movie theaters. That’s right! Amazon Prime Video is coming to a theater near you, and we have all the details.
Amazon’s The Report Getting a Theater Release
Recently, Netflix almost won Best Picture Award for Roma at the Oscars. The streaming giant came up short. However, the streaming giant transformed the way streaming services were portrayed by the mass media and content consumers alike. They definitely made an indelible impression on Amazon.
Jeff Bezos says, “Well see you, Netflix, and raise you one more.” Now, Amazon is primed to release their Sundance flick, The Report in the movie theaters.
The political thriller is going to have a theatrical release on September 27, 2019. This release-date is two weeks before the movie becomes available for Prime TV subscribers through their on-demand catalog. That release date is set for October 11, 2019.
Why is The Report Getting a Theatrical Release?
The theatrical release of Amazon just two weeks before their subscribers get the privilege of seeing the film is being done for three main reasons. One, it’s a new means of revenue. If they can get additional eyes on their product, it also comes with additional dollar bills.
Someone who is not interested in being a Prime TV subscriber may be a movie-goer. You are reaching out to a new demographic. If they like the movie, the content consumer may become even more interested in other projects that Prime TV will work on. Not only does Amazon make a new revenue stream, but they have the opportunity to audition their streaming platform to a new fan base.
Secondly, this theatrical release will put The Report out just in time for 2020 Oscar consideration. There is already heavy buzz surrounding this political thriller and releasing it any later put it at risk of being added to next year’s ballot. Eleven months later makes the film out-of-sight, out-of-mind for 2021 Oscar voters.
Lastly, this is an experiment to see what works. For example, Amazon has released movies in the theater in the past. They released the critically-acclaimed Manchester by the Sea. This release was months before it became available on Prime TV. So, this is a switch in dynamic, and Amazon is testing to see how it works.
