Smart TVs Document Huge Viewer Growth

More and more people are watching television in less traditional ways. Streaming is on its way to becoming far and beyond the number one way to watch your favorite movies and shows. As projected by the AI video platform, Conviva, we are looking at a 114% year-over-year growth for video hours streamed throughout the first quarter of 2018.

Conviva has the ability to collect data from clients that run the gamut of television networks, such as:

  • BT
  • CBS
  • ESPN
  • HBO
  • Hulu
  • NBC
  • Sky
  • Turner

With these projections, Conviva believes viewers will hit upwards of 5 billion viewing hours through a streaming service. As these numbers pour in, Conviva confirmed that North America has seen the biggest surge in streaming, with a 174% increase quarter-by-quarter.

The biggest increase in viewership has come with the advent of Smart TVs.

Slowly, hooking your laptop with an HDMI cord to your television is becoming obsolete. Using apps to view content has grown 136% over the past year. This has lead to huge numbers for the like of Apple TV and Roku. Apple TV saw a whopping 709% growth over the last year, while Roku had an 87% increase in viewing hours. Lastly, Android has also seen an uptick in viewership as their devices has eclipsed an 168% increase in plays quarter-over-quarter.
